In Motion Festival 2024 finds “perfect home” at the Barbican

The Barbican will serve as the host venue for this year’s popular In Motion festival, an industry-leading event organised by Playgrounds, a platform that showcases and celebrates the creative image such as illustration, animation, film, games, digital design, and art.

The two-day festival, set to take place on October 10-11, 2024, is expected to draw 1,000 plus attendees each day.

This year’s festival will bring together trailblazing artists in animation, motion design and liquid cutting-edge creativity to showcase insight into the creative processes of some of the best creators working in the digital arts today. The festival will be primarily hosted in the Barbican Hall, with additional activities across the venue’s foyers.

Playgrounds chose the Barbican for its world class production capabilities, and the Centre’s position as London’s creative catalyst, making it the perfect venue to showcase the innovation driving today’s entertainment industry.

“We are delighted to bring In Motion to the Barbican, a venue that not only offers exceptional production capabilities but also truly understands the importance of supporting and showcasing the people behind the magic,” says Leon van Rooij from Playgrounds. “We’re really looking forward to working with the Barbican’s events team and delivering something spectacular for our diverse audience.”

This year’s programme boasts a stellar line-up of industry legends, including renowned animators, TV creators, artists, and filmmakers. Attendees will be able to experience talks with Dougal Wilson, famed for the iconic John Lewis Christmas adverts, and David Wilson, a music video extraordinaire. The festival will also feature an industry garden, networking events, and an exciting after-party.

The Barbican’s successful bid to host the festival marks a significant win for the venue, having first pitched to host the event in 2022. Playgrounds, based in the Netherlands, has chosen to bring In Motion back to London, recognising the Barbican as the ideal setting for such a vibrant and creative gathering.

“We are incredibly proud to be selected as host for In Motion, a festival that aligns perfectly with our mission to support and celebrate the creative industries. The opportunity to collaborate with Playgrounds and bring such an innovative event to life in our space is a true testament to our capabilities and commitment to creating memorable experiences for our audiences,” comments Glenn Mainwaring, Business Development Manager at Barbican.

About Barbican Business Events

The Barbican is one of the world’s leading conference and international arts venues. Located in the City of London, it is capable of holding meetings from 10-2,000 delegates in its fully equipped concert hall, theatres, conference suites and boardrooms. Barbican Business Events brings together the venue’s expertise in the arts and corporate meetings.

Built as part of London’s Barbican development and officially opened in March 1982 by HM Queen Elizabeth, unlike many other venues, Barbican was specifically built with the dual purpose of holding conferences and arts events presenting a diverse range of art, music, theatre, dance, film and creative learning.

The Barbican’s Business Events team contributes to the venue’s future success. To make the most of the Barbican’s rich culture and heritage, Barbican Business Events was created to bring together their expertise in three very different areas – the arts, creative learning and corporate business. This approach to corporate events is based on stronger, more in-depth partnerships with their artistic, creative learning and development teams in order to bring more creativity and rich content to events.

About the Barbican

The Barbican is a catalyst for creativity, sparking possibilities for artists, audiences, and communities. We showcase the most exciting art from around the world, pushing traditional artistic boundaries to entertain and inspire millions of people, create connections, provoke debate, and reflect the world we live in.

We are an international arts and events centre rooted firmly in our own neighbourhood, collaborating with local communities and putting the City of London on the map as a destination for everybody. Central to our purpose is supporting emerging talent and shaping opportunities that will accelerate the next generation of creatives.

As a not-for-profit, we rely on the generosity of individuals and organisations, including our principal funder the City of London Corporation. Every ticket purchased, donation made, and pound earned supports our arts and learning programme and enables the widest possible range of people to experience the joy of the arts.

Opened in 1982, the Barbican is a unique and audacious building, recognised globally as an architectural icon. As well as our theatres, galleries, concert halls and cinemas, we have a large conservatory with over 1,500 species of plants and trees, a library, conference facilities, public and community spaces, restaurants, bars, and a picturesque lakeside oasis.
